Outdoor Camping Gear and Backpack Equipment
An important part of your camping or backpacking equipment is, of course, your tent. There is more to choosing a tent than you may think! It pays to do some research before you go to the store as tents are designed for use in various seasons and weathers and you need to carefully consider how and when you will be using the it. An all season tent will not be suitable for mountain trips in the winter!
Things to Think About Before You Buy a Tent
The Season
Tents are classified by the season and weather that they are appropriate for.
Three Season - suitable for use in all but the coldest weather.
Four Season - Suitable for all conditions including extreme cold
All Season - these are usually family of car tents suitable for camping in the summer.
Size and Weight
Of course you will need a tent appropriate for how many people it needs to accomodate. Although a bigger tent may be more comfortable you also need to consider how heavy it is if you’re going to do a lot of hiking. Make sure before you buy a tent you find out how much it weighs as this can vary a lot. You will not want to buy one that’s too heavy for you to move around.
Keeping out the Rain
Nowadays most tents are treated with a waterproof coating that also allows good ventilation. In most tents you can attach a fly to the poles to prevent water coming in but allowing ventilation. Look for a tent with a sewn in floor.
Erecting the Tent
You won’t want to buy a tent that is difficult to erect. A frame and dome tents are easy to set up. They are also easy to pack up when you strike camp. Cabin tents tend not to be so easy.
Air Flow
Good ventilation is essential and you should look for a tent that has openings on all the sides. It’s always a good idea to have mesh screens on all sides. The mesh will keep out any debris flying around and bugs and will allow good air flow through the tent.
Conclusion
It is not hard to buy suitable cheap camping gear or backpack equipment but you need to research the suitability of the gear for the time of year and conditions that you intend to use it.
