Camping - Who else loves camping?
No matter when I go off to camp somewhere, someone gets on my case. They want to know what is so great about sleeping on the ground inside a tiny nylon shell?
Give it a break. How can they understand. I never see camping like that. Okay, once, just once,. I was inches away from the bear who was just going to get some water. I thanked my stars for my tent that night. Tent fabric rips a lot more easily than you might imagine as I did that night.
Ah, but you see, camping is more than the tent. Not just the tent or the ground, it is everything. Being outdoors is truly BEING. Breathe fresh air. Listen to the lack of noise. Listen to the waterfalls and rapids in the river. Watch the birds. It is birdwatching from inside the home of the bird.
I sleep well when I camp, most of the time. I love it. When I choose my campsite carefully it is as safe as a hotel and a lot cheaper. I am usually very comfortable because I go camping well prepared for all sorts of weather and inclement conditions.
Every season I yearn to lie on the ground and watch the stars. If I miss it, I feel cheated. Yes, I like to lie outside ON the Ground in almost the same place in each season. Sometimes I am so busy enjoying the stars I do not fall asleep until almost morning. (Same place, give or take a few feet.)
When I learned how to call owls by mimicking their sounds my camping adventures took a new turn. Incredible. Now night bird listening is as exciting as watching birds during the day.
Right. Friends and family worry about me. They think I am crazy. Maybe I do some crazy things. But if this is crazy I am glad to be outdoors enjoying the gifts of nature and feeling the energy of the earth. Now that is starting to sound a bit flakey but it is true.
A weekend in the wilderness with my camping gear and birding binoculars can recharge my spirit like nothing else can. I am in touch with all creation.
